OK, we admit, house rewiring seems a bit daunting. But on the flip side, it’s the best way to keep your house safe, especially if you have experienced one of these 5 signs:

  1. If you have flickering lights
  2. If you have a power outage
  3. If your fuse box looks confusing
  4. If you have a short circuit
  5. If you have a bad smell from the vents

Signs you need to rewire your house

Flickering lights

That one is one of the most common and easiest to notice. You turn the lights on as it’s dark outside, and you can see flickering light. In the beginning, it may be once every so often. But later you notice it more regularly.

Typically, it is a sign of a bigger issue with the wiring. The longer you wait, the more serious the problem will become. So, you should contact your local electrician as soon as possible.

Power outage

Assuming you have been paying your electricity bills on time, and there was a recent storm that could damage the electric lines, if you had a power outage, that means there is an issue with the wiring in your house.

The first thing you should do is to check the fuse box if any fuse has tripped. If all fuses are in correct positions (read: pointing upwards), the reasons can be many. Of course, call an electrician and verify the situation with them.

Fuse box cabling

You never know who had played with the cables in your house before you bought it, and in what condition they left the fusebox. But believe us, we have seen all possible scenarios:

  • Wrong colour cables in wrong spots
  • Too long cables
  • Extended cables, you name it

If that is the case in your house, and it’s older than 25 years, then you may need to rewire the house.

Short circuit

You don’t want that one, for sure. A short circuit happens when electricity travels along the wrong path. It may cause electric shock, fire, or other serious damage. If you saw sparks going out your fuse box, sockets, or electric devices, turn the power off and call an electrician. They may need to rewire your house.

Bad smell from vents

Electric cables run within your walls, under the floorboards, behind the kitchen counters. If you have noticed a hard to identify bad smell around the house, that may be a sign of burning cables. In that case, you better call electricians to check that.

What to do next

If any of these 5 signs happen in your house, you may be facing a need to rewire the house. But bear in mind, there may be other reasons to perform that operation. Occasionally, they are not as obvious as sparks or blinking bulbs.

Electricity is dangerous for your life, so look after your family and contact your friendly local team of electricians as soon as you have noticed a problem.

They will help you find the issue, address it and perform the necessary work.
